Frequently asked questions

1. What is floating?

Most people who have experienced floating would say that floating is a method of attaining the deepest rest that humankind has ever experienced. Essentially, it’s spending an hour lying quietly in the dark, suspended in a warm solution of Epsom salt, about 10” deep, so dense that you float effortlessly. We play some gentle music into the float room to help you relax, in short, its complete mental and physical relaxation.

2. How long is a float session?

The floatation session lasts an hour and a quarter, including showering and dressing time but allow extra time as its important for you to relax after your float with complimentary refreshments.

3. Might I be bored or frightened?

Anyone who floats regularly will tell you how blissfully comfortable and deeply relaxed they feel whilst floating. Your as close as your ever likely to be to an experience of weightlessness, and surprisingly , there is no feeling of being confined in a tight space.

4. What should I bring?

Just a towel, swimming costume and a tired body – shower gels, shampoo, ear plugs, hair dryer etc  are all provided in the float suite.

5. How do I know its hygienic?

We have to comply with stringent Health and Safety regulations. The water in the float room is naturally sterile due to the high salt content, nothing harmful can live in the float environment. We also add a limited amount of swimming pool sterilizing agents, in addition the entire solution is filtered three times between each float session and the water tested on a regular basis.

6. Will my skin go wrinkly?

No, because the water contains high salt levels it doesn’t rob your skin of salt, (which is what causes wrinking), rather it leaves your skin soft and silky.

7. What if I am claustrophobic?

There is no feeling of being confined in a tight space because the float rooms are spacious and airy, have underwater lighting and are easy to get in and out of as they do not have a hatch but a normal door which simply pushes open, the float rooms are also fitted with an alarm linked to the reception in case of emergency.

8. Can I float if I am pregnant?

Absolutely! In fact heavily pregnant women probably get more relief from the float tank than anyone else. Just lying on a bed can be extremely uncomfortable for women in the later stages of pregnancy due to massive gravitational strain placed on the body. The float room is a wonderful haven to which pregnant women can escape –Pregnancy and Birth magazine gave Floatation 10 out of 10 as a useful pregnancy therapy!

9. What if I can’t swim or accidently turn over?

Floating does not require any swimming skills whatsoever. You’ll actually float like a cork and it doesn’t matter what shape or size you are. As the water is very shallow and much heavier due to the Epsom salt you float very easily and much higher in the water than in a swimming pool. You float on your back with absolutely no effort and there is no tendency to roll over. People often sleep during floatation and there is no risk of rolling over even if your asleep.

10. Is it private?

Yes, our float room is contained within your own individual float suite, the room has its own toilet, shower and changing space and is for your exclusive use for the duration of your session.

11. What if I don’t like being in the dark?

The float room has underwater lights which are controlled from inside by the individual, you can leave the lights on all through your float session, you can have music playing all through too if you like.

12. Is there anyone who shouldn’t float?

Anyone suffering severe epilepsy, schizophrenia or acute skin disorders should avoid floating.

13. Is there anything else I should know?

Avoid shaving on the day of your float as freshly shaved skin may be irritated and thereby detract from the experience, contact lenses also need to be removed so please bring a case to put them in.

14. Is floating successful for everyone?

Floating, as with other things doesn’t suit everybody. It needs a willingness on your part to let go and see what happens, and you may need to float a few times before you are able to relax completely, both physically and mentally. Depending on your own journey through life, a float might provide an hour of total physical relaxation – or a profound healing experience, emotionally and spiritually transforming.
